The most recognizable entry in the Gel-Lyte series - aided by its well-timed reissue in the mid-2000s - is no stranger to street level wear as a style statement. Even back when it debuted, progressive-minded New York connoisseurs were attracted by this relatively high-cost, near-pinnacle performance piece for its interesting yet accessible appearance.
Still, fashion wasn’t necessarily the intention during it’s development, the split tongue fit is often considered the key selling point, but from a performance standpoint, it was the trim-density compression moulded EVA midsole for extra impact protection that really broke ground. That, plus the vertically extended medial and lateral mid foot frame for excellent motion control and new interpretation of the external heel counter, made this the most comfortable rider date from the GEL-Lyte series. The quirky details that complemented the function have helped to give this silhouette an appeal that just keeps escalating with each new colorway.
Here comes the GEL-LYTE III in the "Olive Canvas" colorway. Asics uses a mix of smooth leather and suede overlays for the material.
